The archipelago
Nine islands, two groups, one country.
The islands divide into two groups, named for their relationship to the prevailing north-easterly trade winds. The Barlavento, or windward, islands lie to the north; the Sotavento, or leeward, islands to the south.
Santa Luzia, between São Vicente and São Nicolau, is uninhabited: it is a protected nature reserve, and the waters around it form a marine protected area. Travelling between islands involves a mix of domestic flights and ferries, and the practical options differ from one pair of islands to another.
The archipelago
Nine islands, nine journeys.
Cape Verde is not one destination: every island has its own landscape, pace and culture. We operate on six islands every day and arrange the other three on request.
Mindelo, the cultural capital: morna, carnival and harbour life.
A hiker’s paradise: green valleys and clifftop trails.
Praia, UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha and the African soul of the country.
The 2,829 m volcano, its vineyards and its coffee.
Santa Maria beaches, the salt flats of Pedra de Lume, turquoise sea.
Endless beaches, whales in spring, turtles in summer.
Wild beaches and absolute calm, far from it all.
Mountains and villages off the beaten track.
The island of flowers, the archipelago’s best kept secret.
