Electronic Travel Authorisation
FAQ
What is the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation)?
The ETA is an electronic travel authorisation required by the UK government for certain nationalities before entering the United Kingdom. It is mandatory even for short stays such as tourism, educational visits, or sports development programmes.
Who needs an ETA to travel to the United Kingdom?
The ETA applies to travellers from countries that do not require a visa to enter the UK. The system is being introduced progressively and now includes many non-visa nationalities and will apply to European travellers as well. As requirements may evolve, travellers should always check the latest official guidance from the UK government before travelling.
Can Atlas & Aura assist groups with the ETA process?
Yes. As part of our support services, Atlas & Aura informs partner academies and organisations about UK entry requirements, including ETA regulations. We can provide official resources, reminders, and guidance to help ensure that all travellers complete their applications in time before departure.
When should travellers apply for an ETA?
We recommend applying for the ETA at least 72 hours before departure. However, it is advisable to apply as soon as the trip is confirmed to avoid any last-minute issues.
What happens if an ETA application is refused?
If an ETA application is refused, travellers must contact the relevant UK authorities for further information. While Atlas & Aura cannot intervene in the decision process, we can help guide partners and travellers toward the appropriate next steps.
Does the ETA replace a visa?
No. The ETA is not a visa. Depending on your nationality and the purpose of your visit, a visa may still be required in addition to or instead of an ETA. Travellers should always verify the requirements applicable to their situation.
How much does the ETA cost and how long is it valid?
The ETA currently costs £16 per person and is generally valid for two years, or until the passport used in the application expires (whichever comes first). More information: GOV.UK – Apply for an ETA
Can children or groups apply for an ETA?
Yes. Each traveller, including children, must have their own ETA. Group organisers may assist travellers with their applications, but each ETA remains an individual authorisation linked to a passport. More information: GOV.UK – Apply for an ETA
Is an ETA required for passengers in transit?
If you pass through UK border control during your transit, an ETA may be required. If you remain airside in the international transit area without crossing UK border control, an ETA is generally not required. More information: GOV.UK – When you do not need an ETA
